That fish is a rod thief

Sunday while taking a picture of a white bass Ian had caught I set my rod down to grab my camera. I thought I’d pulled my fly out of the water but I must not have. After a few photos and releasing his fish, we turned to see my rod disappearing under the water. We sat there dumbfounded for a few seconds and started searching for it. A few minutes later it surfaced about thirty feet away. We rowed over to it and using the GoPro on a pole, I was able to snag the rod and pull it to hand. I handed Ian the GoPro and landed the thief.

There’s a lesson to be learned here. If you set your rod down make sure you have your fly out of the water. While this was a cheap setup, this could have been disastrous for me. Had this been a larger fish, I might never have seen that rod and reel again.

So what did I learn from this? Never trust a fish.

    1. Yeah Repo Man was awesome. The soundtrack was great too. Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, Circle Jerks, Fear.. Good times. Hombre Secreto is still one of my favorite songs ever.

        1. Thanks Matt. We thought it was after we got the rod back. Before we got it back it was “shit shit shit shit”. I would have left the audio but everything is so muffled in that GoPro case.

    1. I actually remember watching that video and took his advice. I markered up my open back pieces to differentiate them from the closed. It’s worked so far. I think the word is so far.
